OpenAI has unveiled o1, a new family of AI models built to tackle difficult reasoning tasks in mathematics, coding, and science. The company says the system is designed to handle problems that require multiple steps of logic, rather than simply generating fast responses.

According to OpenAI, o1 uses reinforcement learning and additional test-time compute to “think” through a problem before answering. That approach allows the model to spend more time evaluating possible solutions, which the company says leads to stronger performance on challenging benchmarks.

OpenAI highlighted results including 83% on AIME 2024, a benchmark for advanced math, and 74% on GPQA Diamond, a difficult science question set. The company described the launch as a major step forward in AI reasoning capabilities, particularly for tasks that demand careful analysis and structured problem-solving.

The release also heightens competition among leading AI labs racing to build more capable frontier models. OpenAI said o1-pro is available through ChatGPT Pro, while o1-preview can be accessed by ChatGPT Plus users. The rollout signals the company’s push to move beyond general-purpose chat toward systems that can better support complex, high-stakes work.
