Manchester City have agreed a €25 million deal to sign River Plate midfielder Claudio Echeverri, with the 18-year-old Argentine set to join the Premier League champions in July after the Olympic Games.

River Plate president Jorge Brito confirmed the transfer just hours ago, bringing an end to speculation over the future of one of South America’s most highly rated young players. Echeverri, nicknamed “El Diablito,” has built a growing reputation as an attacking midfielder with strong technical ability, creativity and an eye for goal.

The teenager first drew widespread attention with his performances at the U20 World Cup, where he stood out as one of Argentina’s brightest prospects. City are understood to view him as a long-term investment and a potential successor to Kevin De Bruyne, whose influence has defined much of the club’s recent success.

Echeverri will remain with River Plate for the time being before completing the move later in the year. His arrival would add another elite young talent to Manchester City’s increasingly international squad, as the club continues to plan for the future while competing at the highest level in Europe.
