Two staff members from the Israeli Embassy were killed in a shooting outside the embassy in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening, authorities said. The attack took place amid heightened tensions in the Middle East and has prompted an investigation by U.S. officials as a targeted antisemitic incident.

Police identified the suspect as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, who was taken into custody at the scene. According to initial reports, Rodriguez shouted “Free Palestine” during the attack. Investigators have not yet released a motive, but federal and local authorities are treating the case with urgency given the nature of the victims and the location.

The Israeli Embassy confirmed that two of its employees were killed. Officials did not immediately disclose their names, pending notification of family members. Security around diplomatic facilities in the capital has been increased as investigators work to determine whether the shooting was politically motivated and whether the suspect acted alone.

U.S. authorities condemned the violence and said they are coordinating with Israeli officials. The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of diplomats and the risk of politically charged attacks spilling onto American streets.
