OpenAI has introduced o1, a new family of models built to tackle complex reasoning tasks in math, coding, and science. The company says the system is designed to perform especially well on problems that require multi-step thinking, rather than quick pattern matching.

According to OpenAI, o1 achieved strong results on several challenging benchmarks, including 83% on AIME 2024 and 74% on GPQA Diamond. Those scores suggest the model can handle advanced academic and technical questions more effectively than previous generations.

A key feature of o1 is its use of reinforcement learning to encourage step-by-step deliberation before producing an answer. OpenAI says this approach helps the model “think” more like a human expert working through a difficult problem, weighing options before responding.

The release marks a notable step forward in AI capability, particularly for users who need assistance with complex analysis, programming, or scientific reasoning. OpenAI said the model is now available through ChatGPT, with safety measures in place to help manage risks associated with more powerful AI systems.
