Russia carried out its largest aerial assault of the war on Ukraine, launching more than 180 missiles and drones in a coordinated overnight barrage that struck Kyiv and several other cities. Ukrainian officials said air defenses intercepted many of the incoming weapons, but the scale of the attack still left widespread destruction, killing at least 24 people and injuring more than 100.
Residential buildings, schools, and critical infrastructure were damaged in multiple regions as emergency crews worked through the wreckage and fires. In Kyiv, residents were forced into shelters as explosions echoed across the capital, while authorities reported similar scenes in other parts of the country.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault as a major escalation and renewed his call for stronger Western support, particularly additional air defense systems. The attack comes amid continued fighting and mounting pressure on Ukraine’s air defenses, which have been stretched by repeated Russian strikes on civilian areas and energy infrastructure.
Officials warned that the death toll could rise as rescue operations continue. The bombardment underscored the intensity of the conflict and the growing urgency of international military aid as Ukraine seeks to protect its cities from increasingly large-scale aerial attacks.
